Meanwhile Palestine is an ongoing Instagram image-text series begun in early 2024. It juxtaposes the popular genre of wilderness photography with written responses to the Gaza genocide. The series reflects the acute dissonance between the tranquil images of nature cycling on my home screen and Israel’s unconscionable actions against Palestinians revealed by my social media feed. This small, personal dissonance symbolises the greater dissonance I share with others from legacy media’s manufactured consent to, and complicity in, Israel’s violence. Meanwhile Palestine is an acknowledgement of my privilege as I continue to recreate outside throughout a genocide, and a protest piece that refuses to share images of atrocity as content. It is also a public means of declaring and documenting my opposition to the holocaust: future generations will know that I was not silent, but bore witness while in its midst.
